The University of Cape Town’s Law@Work department, along with specialist online training company GetSmarter, are proud to announce the third presentation of the outstanding University of Cape Town (Law@Work) Practical Labour Law course. The eight-week part-time course, which starts on 6th September 2010, is presented entirely online via GetSmarter’s sophisticated Internet training platform.

The South African laws around maternity leave are written to protect a pregnant and breastfeeding mother in the work environment. However, maternity leave also serves the purpose of allowing a mother to bond with and care for her child. South African labour law does not explicitly provide guidelines for maternity and paternity leave for parents who have adopted a child. However, here is a rundown of the relevant legislation, with suggestions of how it could apply to adopting parents.

Companies have responded in a variety of ways to employees spending time on social networking websites. Some have taken internet control to its pinnacle and banned Facebook, Twitter and other sites completely. Others restrict access during certain times of the day, or monitor employees’ activity and caution over-users. On the other hand some companies endorse and encourage social media usage.
Here are some of the pros and cons of banning social networking websites in your workplace.

What is an automatically unfair dismissal? There are some reasons for which employees may never be fired, under any circumstances. An automatically unfair dismissal is any dismissal that is made on these impermissible grounds. The grounds that are considered automatically unfair are listed in section 187 of the Labour Relations Act.

We tend to find it easier to deal with performance of things like vehicles, machinery, equipment, finances, stock. It is no wonder, since problems with our human assets or human capital are often more complex and less comfortable to deal with and this aspect of management is one of a manager’s most difficult tasks.
