The South African laws around maternity leave are written to protect a pregnant and breastfeeding mother in the work environment. However, maternity leave also serves the purpose of allowing a mother to bond with and care for her child. South African labour law does not explicitly provide guidelines for maternity and paternity leave for parents who have adopted a child. However, here is a rundown of the relevant legislation, with suggestions of how it could apply to adopting parents.
