The course in a nutshell:

  • 10-week part-time wine tasting course presented through a combination of online and contact learning, allowing for flexible studying
  • Gain the skills and confidence to evaluate wine and identify various cultivars and faults
  • Be exposed to over 80 different wine samples (SA and international)
  • Includes 2 separate workshops held in Cape Town and Johannesburg
  • Results in a Certificate in Wine Evaluation from Stellenbosch University

This wine tasting course certifies successful students for selection to the South African Wine and Spirits Board and Veritas tasting panels.

Course modules:

Module 1    Introduction to wine and the South African wine industry
Module 2    Viticulture
Module 3    Winemaking
Module 4    Storing of wine, serving of wine and food and wine pairing
Module 5    Evaluation of wine
Module 6    Practical 3-hour workshop on wine evaluation
Module 7    Self-tasting of 6 South African wines and wine production in France, Germany
                    and Italy
Module 8    Self-tasting of 6 South African wines and wine production in Spain, Portugal
                    and Austria
Module 9    Self-tasting of 6 South African wines and wine production in Australia, New Zealand,
                    Chile, Argentina and California
Module 10  Practical 3-hour workshop and practical assessment

Who should attend this course?

This wine-tasting course is suitable for anyone with a keen interest in wine. More specifically:

  • Wine professionals and other people involved in the wine industry - winemaking staff, viticulturists, wine distributors, wine marketers, restaurant and bar managers, hotel staff, academics, waitrons, tour guides and event organisers - will be equipped with expert knowledge and credibility that enables them to better serve their clients.

  • Non-professionals and people outside the wine industry, such as general wine drinkers, members of wine clubs, corporate relationship managers, client liaison officers and others who simply enjoy a good glass of wine will benefit from an enhanced understanding and appreciation of wine products.
